How to Choose a Nursing Home in Malaysia

A practical, independent guide for families

Choosing residential care for a parent or relative is rarely planned far in advance — often it follows a fall, a hospital discharge, or a carer who can no longer cope. This guide breaks the decision into clear steps so you can move quickly without cutting corners.

1. Start with the level of care needed

Care centres vary widely. Be clear on what your loved one actually needs today, and what they may need soon:

Ask a doctor or hospital discharge planner to summarise the medical needs in writing — it makes comparing centres far easier.

2. Confirm the centre is licensed

In Malaysia, residential care centres must register with JKM under the Care Centre Act 1993. A current licence is the single most important baseline check. On this directory, look for the Licensed badge, and read our guide on understanding JKM licensing. Treat an Unverified status as a prompt to confirm registration directly with the operator and JKM before proceeding.

3. Shortlist by location and budget

Proximity matters more than families expect — regular visits are easier, and being close lets you respond quickly. Use the directory filters to narrow by state and town. Then set a realistic monthly budget; see the cost of elderly care for what to expect.

4. Visit in person — always

Never commit based on a website or phone call. Visit at least two or three centres, ideally unannounced or at mealtimes. Take our checklist of questions. Notice the things photos never show: the smell, how staff speak to residents, whether call bells are answered, and whether residents look engaged and clean.

5. Compare, then decide

Weigh licensing, staffing ratios, medical cover, cleanliness, food, activities, fees and location together — not any one factor alone. Ask for the fee schedule in writing, including what is not included (diapers, medication, doctor visits, physiotherapy). Read the contract carefully before signing.
